Cosmo Energy Holdings and S-Bridges Collaborate on Bioethanol Production Technology from Food Processing Residues
Tokyo, Japan — Cosmo Energy Holdings Co., Ltd. has announced a strategic collaboration with S-Bridges corp. to jointly develop innovative technology for producing bioethanol from food processing residues.
S-Bridges has pioneered a proprietary extraction process that isolates valuable components such as fertilizers and proteins from non-edible plant materials, including tea leaves and coffee grounds. Following extraction, the remaining cellulose fibers are provided to Cosmo Energy Holdings, which applies saccharification and fermentation techniques to produce ethanol. A distinctive feature of this process is that the cellulose, once extracted, is in a state highly conducive to saccharification. This reduces the energy required for saccharification and pretreatment, thereby enhancing economic efficiency.
Laboratory-scale trials have already demonstrated successful extraction of useful components and ethanol production. Building on these results, S-Bridges plans to collaborate with multiple food and beverage manufacturers, with trial operations of a compact demonstration unit scheduled to commence within food factories by fiscal year 2026.
Cosmo Energy Holdings has emphasized that “existing technologies are sufficient for implementation” (New Energy Business Division). With commercialization agreements already underway with food and beverage manufacturers, the company is targeting commercial deployment as early as fiscal year 2027, with applications extending to automotive fuels and other sectors.
This collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and contributing to a circular economy by transforming food processing residues into renewable fuel.
